The UK’s first private college delivering clinical postgraduate dental education has opened its doors following a management buyout from the BPP University School of Health.
Having established itself an independent college in 2018, the College of Medicine and Dentistry has re-launched as one of the largest postgraduate dental education provider in the UK with over 200 UK and international graduates since it’s beginnings in 2013 whilst it was part of BPP’s School of Health.
Innovative courses with pioneering educational techniques
With a campus in central Birmingham comprising of a state-of-the-art teaching rooms, simulation centre and clinical facilities, the CoMD is focused on its mission to deliver advanced patient care and education, alongside its collaborative research and teaching facilities.
The CoMD offers a set of internationally recognised innovative Master of Science courses, diplomas and post-graduate certificates in medical and dental discipliners. PhD and professional doctoral programmes is also on offer for those interested in an academic career.
With an international faculty from the UK, France, Belgium, Italy, USA, Greece and other countries, the CoMD aims to reform dental education in the UK and in Europe with courses that are career focused and highly relevant to today’s dental professionals. This is achieved by working closely with the industry and the international research organisations to avail the current technology within each course. The courses are delivered using a well-structured blended learning approach; which means that students are able to continue to work in practice whilst furthering their education. The college is also offering full-time courses for international students suitable for new graduates wishing to pursue a speciality before embarking on the professional dentist lifecycle.

State of the art facilities
One of the unique advantages of the College of Medicine and Dentistry which make it stand out from other education providers is the state-of-the-art dental hospital and simulation centre in central Birmingham. This is where students are able to treat patients under supervision during their studies. The College dental hospital operates as a centre of referral for the local dental community and for patients who need specialist treatment. GDC registered students are able to work alongside the faculty to treat cases as part of their training in periodontics, implants, endodontics, orthodontics, oral surgery and restorative cases.

World class faculty
The College employs a highly competent professionals teaching in clinical, simulated and class room settings. In addition, the College recruited a truly international associate faculty with recognised experts, distinguished specialists, experienced practitioners and world class speakers. On the research front, the College has 25 national and international research supervisors from different specialties and backgrounds, they are able to provide a wide range of research topics. Head of Restorative Dentistry – Professor Raj RajaRayan OBE
Qualifications: MA(Clin Ed), MSc(Lon), BDS(Lon), FDS RCSEd, FFGDP(UK)RCS(Eng), MRD RCS(Eng), MGDS RCS(Eng), DRD RCSEd, LDS RCS(Eng) MRIP, RPf, CertP. Honorary: FICD, FPFA, FACD
Past Dean Faculty of General Dental Practice (UK), The Royal College of Surgeons of England, and Past Associate Dean of Postgraduate Dentistry, London Deanery, University of London.
He was a former member of the Standing Dental Advisory Committee to the Secretary of State for Health and the Lord Chancellor on Judicial Appointments of judges as well as of Magistrates. He also served on other advisory panels.
He was the Chairman of the AOG, past President of the British Society for General Dental Surgery, past Chairman of the Pierre Fauchard Academy (UK Chapter), and the National Centre for Transcultural Oral Health. He has been elected honorary life member of several dental organisations from many countries including India, Malaysia, UK, Lebanon and Sri Lanka.
He has co-authored, edited and contributed chapters in several significant publications. He originated and served on the Editorial Board of the first Continuing Education Journal (CPD-Dentistry) in Britain, which was the first verifiable CPD journal in the UK, and he continues to serve on several editorial panels.
He is a registered specialist in restorative dentistry and an internationally acclaimed lecturer having lectured as keynote speaker in numerous countries at several international events.
He was a Director on the Board of Management of the Eastman Dental Institute prior to its merger with University College London. During his tenure, the new International Centre for Excellence in Dentistry was established to underpin the continuing professional development of general dental practitioners.
Head of Periodontics – Professor Flavio Pisani
Flavio Pisani graduated in Dentistry from the Catholic University of Rome Agostino Gemelli, Italy, in 1993. He holds an MClinDent in Oral Surgery, a MSc in Implant Dentistry and a MClinDent in Periodontology from the Italian Society of Periodontology and Implant Dentistry (SIdPI). He completed his PhD in Dentistry in 2008 at the University of Rome Tor Vergata, Italy.
Before relocating to the UK, Flavio has been actively involved as a clinical teaching fellow in dental education focused on periodontology, and oral and implant surgery at undergraduate and postgraduate courses in several Italian Universities. He is a Member of the SIdPI. Dr Pisani has a special interest in the management of periodontal diseases, and advanced treatments of regenerative and root coverage surgery.
Flavio held the position of Full Time Senior Clinical Lecturer in Periodontology at BPP University since 2014, and he currently leads the MClinDent Programme in Periodontology at the CoMD.
Head of Oral Implantology – Associate Clinical Professor Curd ML Bollen
DDS, PhD, MSc, MClinDent
Curd Bollen graduated in 1992 as dentist (DDS) at the Catholic University Leuven. In 1996 he received his PhD, and in 1997 he finished his MSc in Periodontology & Implantology (Leuven). In 2016 he completed his MClinDent programme from the University of the Pacific, USA.
Professor Bollen has published 35 articles in international dental journals and was co-author of eight books/chapters in books. He is Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Dental Health, Oral Disorders & Therapy.
Curd has been leading a clinic in the Netherlands, actively performing clinical work in periodontology, implantology and halitosis. Since 2018 he is scientific board member of the European Society for Ceramic Implantology (ESCI).
He has an extensive international experience working in academic institutions as a consultant in the University of Leuven, Liège University, Nijmegen University, Bonn University, and in Düsseldorf University where he was a clinical assistant professor. He also worked in the University of Manchester as a senior clinical lecturer. He recently joined the CoMD as an Associate Clinical Professor.
Head of Endodontics – Visiting Professor James Pritchard
Professor James Prichard qualified at the Royal London Hospital in 1994. He is a nationally renowned teacher in endodontics, delivering hands on courses, lectures and seminars throughout the UK. He has held the posts of Associate Clinical Teacher and Clinical Supervisor in endodontics on the Masters Programme at the University of Warwick. Before joining the College of Dentistry, he held the title of Visiting Professor and Programme Leader on the MClinDent in Endodotology at BPP University working in association with City of London Dental School. He has published widely in the dental journals including the International Endodontic Journal, The British Dental Journal and Endodontic Practice. James has also demonstrated the latest advances in endodontic technology for Schottlander at the Dental Showcases since 2004. James gained his Masters Degree (MSc) in Restorative Dental Practice with distinction from the Eastman Dental Institute. He also holds BDS(ULond), LDSRCS(Eng) and MFGDP(UK) qualifications, and in 2011 was awarded his Fellowship from The International Academy of Dental Facial Esthetics in New York.
Head of Oral Surgery Visiting Professor Aakshay Gulati
Aakshay is a Consultant in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery in the East Kent University Hospitals NHS Trust. Professor Gulati has completed a head and neck sub-specialty fellowship in an internationally acclaimed centre in Munich and was subsequently also selected for the highly coveted national interface ead and neck fellowships. He has also developed an interest in implantology and facial aesthetics.
